Practice footage with the band

Before filming our music video sequences we have decided that we need to practice and look at the arrangement of the band. During their practice session we have recorded another song with the camera we would be using for the music video to practice using the camera and seeing any issues we may be faced when filming on location.

Found issues during practice filming:
  • When holding the camera there was noticeable camera shake and I think this could be distracting in the future. To reduce the chance of this happening we will make sure we use a tripod or stability device for the majority of the shots.
  • Steady camera movement is hard to achieve. In order to overcome this we will use a dolly track to introduce movement into our shots.
  • When using a wide aperture lens it is tricky to get correct focus while moving but if we use a tripod, this should be made easier.
  • The sound quality from the built-in microphone is very poor, although it is good enough to be synchronised with master tracks. If we wanted to capture the sound from the camera we would use an external microphone with much better quality sound.
Positives from practice filming:
  • The wide aperture lens gives a very attractive soft focus effect
  • Using this DSLR camera we are filming in High Definition which will give us a lot of detail
  • In low light conditions the camera performs very well which is very good because we are planning to do a number of low key shots
